FOCUS ON

Bevagna: is a small medieval village in the province of Perugia, in Umbria. A Roman Municipality (Lat. Mevania), which became important strategic center in the Republican age thanks to its favorable location along the Via Flaminia. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Bevagna was devastated by the Lombards and became part of the Duchy of Spoleto. Proven historical sources attest that the city became a free Guelph commune around 1200, and then a Lordship ruled by the Trinci family but always contended by the Duchy of Spoleto, Foligno, by the city of Perugia and the Papal State. With the only exception of the Napoleonic period, from the Renaissance onwards the city was permanently administered directly by the Holy See until the unification of Italy that took place in 1860.
