FOCUS ON

Umbertide: it is a town in the province of Perugia, crossed by the river Tiber. The first settlements in the area can be traced back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the remains found on Mount Acuto. There also are many Roman settlements but it was in the X / IX century A.D. when the urban center of Umbertide was built as we know it with the original name of Fratta. The first historical documents date back to 1189, in an act of peaceful submission to the city of Perugia although historically it was an unassailable fort, built for protection of the bridge over the Tiber. A wooden dam, located downstream from the bridge over the Tiber, blocked the flow of water in order to flood all the moat around the walls. The city's name was then changed in 1863, in honor of Prince Umberto of Savoy.
