The Natural National Park of the Cinque Terre is one of the prettiest and most enchanting areas of Liguria and Italy. Cinque Terre: Since 1997 the Cinque Terre has been an area protected by UNESCO, and since 1999 it has been declared as natural national park and marine reserve. The Cinque Terre include Monterosso, Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Corniglia and Manarola. The area has been lived in since Roman times, but it is after the year one thousand, having escaped the danger of Saracen invasions, that local populations began to cultivate the area which was more adapt and productive compared to inland, and so came down from the nearby hills and settled in the five hamlets that still characterize the territory. Living off of agricultural, mercantile and fishing activities, the localities of the area managed to develop and prosper so much, to the point where they were able to support the fleet of Genoa in its last battle against the marine republic of Pisa. The area, under the influence of the Republic of Genoa, very soon became part, following its fate in the centuries following. The Cinque Terre is an optimum area for the production of food, and also cooking. Amongst the many to remember are excellent wine Sciachetrà, the very good extra virgin olive oil, and Pesto, one of the typical dishes of Liguria.
Do not miss! Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Trail 2, Via dell’Amore.
